For me, it’s planting garlic and cover crops.
It occurred to me last November when I was STILL planting garlic cloves (with gloves on), that I could have been more efficient, and separated all the cloves from the bulbs at home, say, while I was watching The Love Punch.
(I know it’s a sappy light romance/adventure movie, albeit with two excellent actors. But I think I finally figured out why I love having it on in the background while I work or clean the kitchen – or separate garlic cloves. It’s the soundtrack! And Emma Thompson’s accent of course.)
But I’m a woman from New England (even though I’ve traveled the world), and we don’t do “sitting” well. We move. We fix. We prepare for the next task. Basically, if we’re sitting relaxing, you should keep your phone handy to dial 911.
And so it was that my fingers were getting numb from the cold wet soil while trying to pry apart cloves from the seed garlic, and I thought, “If I wasn’t such a stubborn New England workaholic, I could have been curled up on the couch, just leisurely separating garlic cloves.”
So, this year, knowing that it will never spontaneously occur to me to “stop and smell the garlic,” I have decided to schedule the “garlic splitting, ice cream movie night” on my calendar.
Now to select the movie. Got any suggestions?
And while you’re at it, let me know what your favorite fall garden activities are!
P.S. While this photo is NOT of me planting garlic cloves in the garden in November, it is of me with ice cream close at hand. ✅✅✅

Family – with the requisite ice cream 🤩
